Building a Purpose-Driven Kidswear Brand from the Ground Up

PROBLEM

How might a new kidswear brand create meaningful, gender-neutral clothing that celebrates individuality, encourages play and builds lasting emotional value for modern families?

THE CONTEXT

The founder approached me with a deeply personal challenge.

As a mother, she struggled to find thoughtfully designed clothing that allowed children to move freely, express themselves and outgrow gender stereotypes. She envisioned a brand that celebrated individuality through timeless, handcrafted clothing made from breathable handwoven and organic materials. The garments that are intentionally designed to be loved, shared and passed down, regardless of gender.

She also recognised a growing community of families who considered their pets an integral part of family life and wanted to extend that sense of belonging through coordinated clothing for children and their dog companions.

Having previously built and closed an e-commerce platform due to operational challenges, she wanted this venture to begin with stronger systems, clearer strategy and a more sustainable foundation.

WHAT I NOTICED

Rather than approaching the project through trends alone, I immersed myself in understanding the weaving process, the artisans’ capabilities and the cultural significance behind the craft.

I observed an opportunity to create designs that respected the identity of Venkatagiri weaving while introducing fresh colours, compositions and contemporary aesthetics that could appeal to a wider audience.

The project became an exercise in balancing tradition with innovation, ensuring that every design decision added value without compromising authenticity.

THE CREATIVE RESPONSE

Working closely with artisans, I designed a collection of over 100 woven sarees, translating traditional craftsmanship into contemporary products through thoughtful colour stories, woven motifs and design development.

The process focused on:

  • Understanding the craft ecosystem and artisan capabilities

  • Developing contemporary woven designs rooted in heritage

  • Exploring colour, pattern and composition for modern consumers

  • Creating commercially relevant collections while preserving the integrity of the craft

  • Collaborating across designers, artisans and stakeholders throughout the development process

THE IMPACT

The project demonstrated how design can act as a bridge between heritage and innovation.

By combining cultural understanding with market awareness, the collection contributed to expanding the creative possibilities of Venkatagiri weaving while supporting the continued relevance of the craft and the artisans behind it.

More importantly, it reinforced a belief that continues to shape my practice today:

The most meaningful design solutions emerge when we begin by understanding people, culture and craft—not just the product itself.

REFLECTION

This project profoundly shaped the way I think about design. Working alongside skilled artisans reminded me that innovation doesn’t always come from creating something entirely new, it often begins by deeply understanding and honouring the knowledge that already exists. That perspective continues to influence how I approach every brand, product and collaboration today.

Let's build something meaningful together.

Whether you're looking for a Creative Director, a design strategist, a collaborator or simply want to exchange ideas, I'd love to hear from you.
